The Pythagorean System
Pythagorean numerology is the most widely used system in the West. Pythagoras and his disciples discovered that each letter of the alphabet can be associated with a number from 1 to 9, creating a cyclical system. This method is the basis of the majority of modern numerological calculators and focuses on reducing names and dates to significant numbers.
🏛️ History
Pythagoras of Samos (6th century BC) traveled to Egypt, Babylon, and India, gathering numerical knowledge that he systematized in his school.
🔢 Cyclical System
A=1, B=2, C=3... I=9, J=1, K=2... Z=8. A cycle of 9 numbers that repeats through the alphabet.
💡 Master Numbers
Numbers 11, 22, and 33 are not reduced. They have a special vibration of high spiritual intensity.
How it is calculated: step-by-step example
Take the name JOHN SMITH. Each letter receives its number according to the cycle (A=1, B=2 ... I=9, J=1, K=2 ... R=9, S=1 ... Z=8): J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5 (sum 20); S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8 (sum 24). Total name: 20+24=44. Reduction: 4+4=8. Expression number: 8. The birth date is reduced the same way: 15/03/1990 → 1+5+0+3+1+9+9+0=28 → 2+8=10 → 1+0=1. Destiny number: 1. The analysis combines both.
When this system suits you
Pythagorean is the default option in the West. It is the most versatile: it serves for personal analysis, compatibility, name change decisions, event readings, and life cycles. If you only learn one system, this is the most practical. Its tables and methods are documented in the majority of modern numerology books.
Limitations to bear in mind
The system reduces to 9 categories (plus 11/22/33), which is necessarily reductive. Different Pythagoreans use slightly different tables for Y (sometimes a vowel, sometimes a consonant) and for accented letters. It also does not resolve whether to reduce "Mary" or "Mary Smith": the most used convention is to work with the full legal birth name, not the common name used in everyday life.
